A dear teacher friend recommended this book and said she couldn't read it to her class without crying! I thought I would be able to read it to my grandson without tearing up, but alas...he had to finish the last few pages! (Much to his delight!) It is such a gentle, tender story. Even when you KNOW what the outcome will be, you can't help but FEEL the emotions the writer conveys so well! Outstanding illustrations put this book in a rare class!

This is a wonderfully warm and positive book about a needy little boy who receives a practical gift every Christmas which alleviates his present discomfort but does not fulfill his greatly-desired secret wish-gift...and how, in later life, he remembers and uses his now- realized gift to continue the generosity and "pay back" with love. It brought tears to the eyes of my Adult Sunday School class. It is even more powerful to realize it is a true story. My grandkids love it also.
I read this to a group of 2nd graders and as I was reading I fell in love with the book. I'm a avid hiker in the Smoky Mountains and I didn't realize what I was reading (the teacher just handed me a book to read to the class). I immediately ordered the book for my own children when I finished with the class.
