The TwentyNine JM Richardson Books

A superb read: When no one will compromise and partisanship goes too far, secessionists get the upper hand and the US splits once again into two countries. Madam President and some of her staff are a bit slow to acknowledge just how difficult the situation is. All too quickly, fighting starts, battles intensify, life gets uglier. The lives of everyone are changed, from national leaders and White House staffers to confused teens and destitute mothers. Two adolescents on the brink of manhood, one from Ohio, one from Texas, find themselves in the military and training for war, a future they never expected for themselves. A tragic complication to the war lurks ahead in the urban devastation of Texas as the two young soldiers fight their way south in their opposing armies. Their fates are now intertwined as tense action shoots them toward each other and their joint destiny. The Twenty-Nine is a skillfully written, suspenseful and thought provoking novel from J. M. Richardson, a young author who must have many good books scrambling to climb out and get into print. Looking forward to reading more.

The TwentyNine JM Richardson Books Reviews

A mind provoking subject. BUT more research should have been done for a book based on the balance of military installation in Red vs Blue states and the make up of the armed forces when it comes to Red vs Blue states. Modern military strategy seems to have been neglected. Most encounters were based on a charge by the Blue forces that encountered dug in Red forces but the Blue forces always prevail with the use of mortars. Frustrating read
J. M. Richardson leaves no questions whatsoever about his politics. As the writer of the book, that's his right. However, when I read a book as politically charged as this one, I would prefer to make my own decisions. It's one thing to lay it out and let the subtelties of the writing influence the reader, it's another to make it so blatant that the reader feels dumber for having read it. In this future civil war society, the Blue (Democratic) President runs her cabinet meeting with heartfelt passion, quick decisions, and several well-placed s-words. In the Red (Republican) breakaway cabinet meeting, the President, seeking information on the war effort, says, "Where are we?" and one general actually looks around and says, "In your office, sir."

One major player's mother's health issues even become a political platform for the author to make sure everyone knows that Republican=ignorant and heartless.

The story starts well and kept me reading. But once we went back in time and met one of the major players and his family, I was appalled by the writing. In one paragraph, there was an adjective before every single noun. Do I really care what side the guy parts his hair on? Is everyone's eye color important to the plot? The carpet color - really?

The crude references to anything of a sexual nature seemed forced and sophomoric. Mr. Richardson is a teacher and some have speculated that this book should be listed as YA writing. Perhaps he thought that's how his students would have preferred the story.

All told, the story is intriguing. Being a DFW resident and a former Gulf Coast resident, the scenes taking place in those locales were well done and accurate geographically. The concept is one most Americans have considered as a possibility. The problem was the execution. The book literally jumped from disquiet over the recent election to secession in one chapter break.

I finished it (skimmed a LOT) because I had to - it was a book club selection. The biggest problem is it was MY choice for the club. I think I better bring a really, really good snack.
J.M. Richardson has tugged at the hearts of every American patriot in his novel. Strong character development and engrossing action makes this a must read for all. The events are so close to today's headline it's scary...and believable! I recommend The Twenty-Nine to all thriller, suspense, and action buffs.
If you compare what's going on in this book to current events, it's a wake up call. Focus on What's important america.
J.M. Richardson really has a knack for creating vivid scenes of chaotic action. There is certainly an impressive web of well-developed characters in The Twenty-Nine, but the way the author places you in the middle of the battle sequences and makes you feel the anxious terror of the soldiers is really what makes this book hard to put down. Spawned from the adversarial relationship between the two parties within our government, the story takes us through a frightening scenario of what could occur if we do not begin to work together to make our country work again. Any rational person will be able to put their personal politics aside, and find The Twenty-Nine to be the excellent book that it is. I really think book reviews should be based on the quality of the overall book and nothing else.
J. M. Richardson's The Twenty-Nine is an action-packed political thriller that is easy to read and hard to put down. Even though it's not specifically a "young adult" novel, the ages of the main characters and the war action makes the book appealing to teens as well as adults.
The premise of a modern day civil war is a scary, and not too implausible, scenario, given the current political climate. Richardson draws readers in with detailed descriptions of battle action in several U. S. cities. Much of the action takes place in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex which makes the book all the more realistic and frightening to North Texas readers.
Even though The Twenty-Nine would have benefitted from a little more proofing and editing, it is a provocative read that will have readers speculating long after the last page is read.
