Overall a sound effort, and a great continuation to the story.

I was very excited for the next chapter in this series after reading the waking fire. Now that I have, I walk away satisfied. Not quite as satisfied as the first book in the series, but none the less, I felt it was a thoughtful and logical next step in the series.

Some slight spoilers below, beware.

I want to be helpful and analytical here so I will list what I liked and disliked. The majority being in the like column.
I loved Lizanne's story line. Gritty, bad ass, and just a lot of fun. I felt like I was in scorazin, and that by far was my favorite part of the book. Miss Blood continues to grow further in legend. I liked, not loved, clay and Hilemore's story line. Actually my favorite story line from the first book was Hilemore to be honest, so i was looking forward to some more high seas antics and captain and commander'esq tom foolery. I didn't get exactly what i wanted, but stayed entertained throughout. I must say i struggled a little bit with Sirus and the Spoiled/White perspective and story line. Something about what transpired during those chapters turned me off. No doubt I grew to absolutely hate our enemy, and was disgusted with much of it, but i also began to hate the character themselves. I wasn't emotionally invested in their survival, and found myself wanting their demise, but knowing the story wouldn't call for it for some time.

So in the end, great book, couple negatives, but well worth the time and effort. I will continue to be a huge Anthony Ryan fan and will be sure to read the next chapter in this adventure as soon as it's available.

The Legion of Flame The Draconis Memoria Anthony Ryan 9781101987896 Books Reviews

Full disclosure I received a signed paperback version from the author in addition to the ebook, which I had pre-ordered.
I've read most of Anthony Ryan's fantasy books, and have thoroughly enjoyed his extensive world-building. This book is a lengthy instalment in the Draconis Memoria trilogy (?!), which mirrors a number of political and societal issues, while being genuinely entertaining. I have to stress that I don't feel as though I am being force fed any particular ideology or opinion. It seems all the various factions have elements that are good or evil.
Typical of Ryan's other books this bounces from one of the primary characters to the other. But, that really works well in his books. You do pretty much have to read the first book in this series to understand this one. But that is also an excellent read, a bit harder to get into at first. Read that and you'll not be able to not want to put this down.
Volume one was a great yarn combining elements of H Rider Haggard with spy novels in a steampunk universe. But most things were tied up by the end although the evil White Drake had begun its reign of butchery.

The present volume builds the excitement. Plenty of spy novel shenanigans, a journey to the center of the earth, a look into the minds of the White Drake’s thralls — and that’s without going into any spoilers. Strap on your spider and release some Black.

I couldn’t put it down and will be waiting impatiently for volume 3 to show up in 2018.
Because comparison is inevitable, I could say I liked this book less than the first installment. However, it is more complex, the characters develop in unexpected ways and we get a glimpse of what happened to magic and the dragons. Some parts I could guess (like the White Drake''s new chosen), some part are really hard to believe (the underground world) and some parts were delicious (Lizanne's new role as ambassador).
Absolutely fantastic ride that leaves me with only one frustration, I have to be patient and wait for the next book.

Being Anthony Ryan, you come into a novel with high expectations of not only high quality prose but of character complexity and multi-faceted story lines as well. Ryan pulls no punches in displaying that the greatest things about humanity can also be some of our fatalist flaws without being hamfisted about it.

I doubt anyone who has read any of his other work really needs to be convinced to give this book/series a shot, but if you haven't yet ventured into the writing domain of Anthony Ryan I would highly encourage it at your earliest possible convenience.
The story picks up with Clay, Lizanne, and Hilmore and a new POV in Sirus. The world building is really well done, characters are built more, and questions are being answered. As well as more being brought up. Unlike the last book that I could barely put down though, this one took me a bit of effort to keep reading. Not sure why, other than I really didn't care for Lizanne's mission politics. Necessary for the story, but not easy for me to read through. Hilmore is amazing, wish he had more parts. Clay, poor guy, just can't seem to catch a break. I look forward to the next book!
What a wonderful second installment to this intriguing story. You've got three major characters and a host of second tier characters that are very interesting. All of these people are very enjoyable. Dialogs is sharp and adds to the character development. Plenty of action to go around, from major conflicts to individual struggles. The world is wonderfully written that you can clearly see it as you read.some of the creativity to the action sequences is just impressive. If for some reason you've been put off by Mr Ryan, think again and start this series, definitely worth the read.
